It's In The Genes

I asked my husband to do 3 things yesterday while I was away. First, give our son his medicine. Second, take him to Kohl's to get underwear. Third, use the Kohl's card for the purchase.

Wanna take bets on how many of the '3 things' were done? NONE! NOT ONE! But there is more to the story.

They went to Kohl's. Bought the underwear, but Danny forgot to take the Kohl's card, so he used the precious, coveted debit card. When they returned home, Danny put Tony's medicine/vitamins in a coffee cup and put it on the counter and simply stated, "here, take these". To which Tony replied, "hold on" and went back upstairs. When I got home yesterday afternoon, I saw the pills in the coffee cup. WTH???

Then this morning, Tony brings his underwear (still sealed in their packages) to Danny. Somehow....they bought the wrong size. They bought XL, not M. So, Danny was thrilled he gets new underwear. As a result, I had to go to Kohl's and purchase the correct size AND use the correct card.

So, true holds the old saying....if you want something done right, do it yourself!!

Giving Back

Ever get one of those postcards in mail asking for donations to ARC or the Veteran's or some other charitable organization? We get them all the time. We gather up stuff to put on our porch every month. We've even donated 2 cars! Not only does it feel good to donate, it feels even better to purge it out of the house.

We go one step further with giving back. Our family actually volunteers! Yes, we walk the walk! This service awareness started when the kids were in scouts. We've volunteers at the Memory Care unit in an Alzheimer's facility, built bird feeders for parks, mowed yards for the elderly neighbors, delivered Thanksgiving meals to the elderly and homebound, and planted trees after the Haymen fire. We even shop at ARC Thrift Store. Believe it or not, this is actually beneath some people to do. Sad...

This year Marisa and I volunteered at Habitat for Humanity's thrift store. Marisa was in charge of sorting and displaying shoes, belts, ties, and purses. She did an awesome job that was noticed by the store manager. I sorted through children's clothes. We learned that nothing is thrown away! When sorting through the bags and boxes, what is not used in the store is actually rebagged for different missions. These missions could be homeless shelters, women's shelters, non-profit service agencies, churches, and oversees needs. The various missions will actually bid on bags of clothing.

And get this! The bags that are not bidded on are taken to the recycle center and processed for car manufacturers. The clothing is used for the stuffing in the seats...this includes BMWs and Cadillacs to trucks and SUVs.

Give back...volunteer! It does the soul good!

St. Valentine's Day

The remains of the original Saint Valentine, patron saint of lovers, have been kept in the Carmelite Whitefriars Street church in Dublin since the early 19th century. In the 1950s the church erected a statue and a shrine where Dubliners and visitors seek the saint's assistance for their love life.

Remember to put the 'saint' back into YOUR life! And, have a happy St. Valentine's Day!!

Dear Mom

Dear Mom,
It's been a year today that I saw you for the last time. I remember that moment last year when you died. I remember that day like it was just a moment ago. Jase and I were with you in your room. We were talking like any other day, having a conversation like any other other conversation. I looked at you and you took your last breath.

It's been one year and so much as happened, yet nothing has changed. Yes, we are all a year older. Marisa is driving! She also lettered in golf as a freshman. Tony is on the track team. Parker is in band and taking guitar lessons. Jaron plays football. Dad continues to have his struggles, but is thriving. Jase and I are looking after him. We even got Dad to come to Colorado for Thanksgiving! And, Dad got another dog! His name is Winston and he is a sweetheart.

Not a day has gone by that I don't think about you. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night crying, missing you terribly. I miss talking to you on the way home from work everyday. I miss seeing you when I come home to Texas. I even miss the humming of your oxygen concentration and the nebulizer. I know that must sound silly, but it's true.

We've made it through one year of birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Yes, we made it through. We celebrated your birthday! We still wished Dad a happy anniversary. Those dates will never change or go away. We reminese about favorite memories the kids had at "Granny and Papa's". We still shed tears, but we also smile and laugh.

I miss you. I love you. You are still a part of me.
